Bell stage

Late bell
(differentiation) stage

In Msx1 null mutant mouse, teeth do not develop past bud stage.
In Msx1/Msx2 double knockout mice, tooth development is arrested either during the initiation stage or early bud stages.
Mutations in MSX1 cause severe congenital tooth agenesis, oligodontia.
Runx2 expression was absent in the mesenchyme in Msx1 null mutant mice. (Åberg et al 2004) See expression of Runx2.
Msx1 expression was reduced in the dental mesenchyme in Pax9 null mutant mice. (Peters et al 1998) See expression of Pax9.
