Expression of Lef1 in mouse tooth

lymphoid enhancer binding factor 1; transcription factor, T-cell specific, 1 alpha; Tcf1 alpha

Species: mouse
Location in mouse genome: chromosome 3, 134712216 - 134824914 (UCSC, assembly October 2003)
Tooth: lower molar
Method: in situ hybridization (radioactive), probe: 360b

Initiation stage
Expression: dental epithelium, dental mesenchyme
No expression: oral epithelium

Bud stage
Expression: dental epithelium, dental mesenchyme
No expression: oral epithelium

Cap stage
Expression: outer enamel epithelium, inner enamel epithelium, enamel knot, dental papilla
No expression: oral epithelium, stellate reticulum, dental sac

Protein distribution similar at cap stage..
Shh expression is lost in the enamel knot in the Lef1 null mutant mouse (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Sonic hedgehog.
Bmp2 expression is lost in the enamel knot in the Lef1 null mutant mouse (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Bmp2.
Bmp4 expression is lost in the enamel knot in the Lef1 null mutant mouse (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Bmp4.
Bmp7 expression is lost in the enamel knot in the Lef1 null mutant mouse (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Bmp7.
Fgf4 expression is lost in the enamel knot in the Lef1 null mutant mouse (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Fgf4.
Fgf4 expression is a direct target of and positively regulated by Lef1 (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Fgf4.
Fgf9 expression is lost in dental epithelium in the Lef1 null mutant mouse (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Fgf9.
Fgf3 expression is lost in the enamel knot and dental mesenchyme in the Lef1 null mutant mouse (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Fgf3.
Fgf10 expression is lost in dental mesenchyme in the Lef1 null mutant mouse (Kratochwil et al 2002). See expression of Fgf10.

Mouse null mutants of Lef1 do not develop teeth.
Lef1expression in the enamel knot is necessary for tooth development.
